TEACHER OF THE MONTH
Congratulations to Mrs. Lisa Farrell who was chosen as the 2020 Eaton May Teacher of the Month. Mrs. Farrell teaches Band and percussion to students in grades six through eight. She works with her students before school, after school and during the summer to help students be successful band members. Mrs. Farrell has her students participate in a variety of band competitions including VBODA All District Band, All City Band, Honor Band, Assessment Camp, Solo and Ensemble festival. She had 43 students make all City Band this year almost half of the students in total and twice as many as any other school. Mrs. Farrell provides her students opportunities via field trips to CNU and the Busch Gardens and Kings Dominion music festivals. She makes learning relevant by having guest speakers come from CNU and works closely with her mentor Mr. Knipple. Mrs. Farrell is a product of Eaton Middle School and continues the long-standing excellence demonstrated by our Eaton “Beatin” Band.

Congratulations to Ms. Shawneque Reid who was chosen as the 2020 Eaton March Teacher of the Month. Ms. Reid teaches 7th grade Math. She works with her students to build strong relationships and attends their games, tutors them after school and even sings to them upon arriving in her classroom. Ms. Reid is the ultimate team player working collaboratively with special education and currently serves on our Champion Team. She has gone above and beyond to connect with her students during the pandemic by incorporating Google Hangouts, individual conferences, zoom sessions and mentoring. Ms. Reid provides outstanding instruction, by allowing for student-to-student interaction and setting consistent expectations, while conveying caring for her students. Congratulations to Mrs. Lisa Hofstra who was chosen as the 2020 Eaton April Teacher of the Month. Mrs. Hofstra teaches Family and Consumer Science to students in grades six through eight. She works with her students to build strong relationships meeting with them before school and during lunch. Mrs. Hofstra has them work on projects, such as planning and cooking meals to share with the Eaton family. She brought in a team of volunteers and worked tirelessly during our Eaton Fall Festival. Mrs. Hofstra recently demonstrated her dedication during the pandemic by sending handwritten postcards with notes to all of her students! Her students care to work because they know she cares. Congratulations to Mr. Michael Baker who was chosen as the 2020 Eaton January Staff Member of the Month. Mr. Baker serves as one of school security officers. Mr. Baker builds relationships with students and staff. Mr. Baker makes himself visible and available to help others no matter what is needed. He is a retired firefighter and uses his experience and expertise to take care of emergency situations. Mr. Baker makes sure that we are safe! Congratulations to Mrs. Kersti Bolton who was chosen as the 2020 Eaton February Teacher of the Month. Mrs. Bolton teaches 8th grade Language Arts. She serves as our Language Arts Instructional Leader and is providing a Writer’s Workshop Seminar. Mrs. Bolton provides outstanding instruction utilizing anchor charts and positive reinforcement. Congratulations to Mr. Freddie Shealey who was chosen as the 2019 Eaton November Teacher of the Month. Mr. Shealey teaches 8th grade mathematics. He is firm, fair, consistent and caring, going the extra mile for his students. Mr. Shealey serves as our Math Counts coach, teaches our math enrichment lab, Saturday school, and serves as a check in check our mentor. He consistently eats with the students in the cafeteria and tutors students after school. Mr. Shealey’s students show tremendous growth under his tutelage. Congratulations to Ms. Carol Tice who was chosen as the 2019 Eaton December Teacher of the Month. Ms. Tice teaches 6th, 7th and 8th grade core subjects. She is the longest tenured teacher at Eaton. Ms. Tice helps to develop individual education plans and serves as a positive role model for students. She builds strong relationships with students and staff, supports extra curricular activities and makes herself available to tutor students. Congratulations to Mrs. Lora Howerton who was chosen as the 2019 Eaton September Teacher of the Month. Mrs. Howerton is our director of school counseling and serves as or 6th and 8th grade school counselor. She is one of our three longest serving faculty members and is our School Activities Coordinator. Ms. Howerton schedules and balances our classes, supervises SOL testing, the fundraiser, and is in charge of CEOs. Please congratulate Mrs. Howerton and thank her for supporting Eaton Middle School!

Congratulations to Mr. Matt Alexander who was chosen as the 2019 Eaton October Teacher of the Month. Mr. Alexander teachers 8th grade Civics and Economics and serves as our Social Studies instructional leader. Mr. Alexander provides relevant lessons for his students and helps to plan the 8th grade D.C. Trip He sponsors our Ecology and Card game clubs and received a grant for an indoor garden. Mr. Alexander’s support for our environment with recycling and clean up days resulted in Eaton being named a Green School by the Hampton City Clean Commission for the second year in a row.
